Satya Nadella Says AI Race Not a Zero-Sum Game, Sees Much Bigger Market for the Tech Amid Massive Impact

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says competition in the AI race is pretty intense, and he believes that it doesn’t have to conclude with just one winner.

In an interview with All-In Podcast members Jason Calacanis and David Sacks at Davos, Nadella says having intense competition in the tech industry is good, as it keeps Microsoft fit.

Nadella also says that he’s not concerned about who’s currently in the lead because he thinks that the market for AI will be so large that there will be multiple winners.

“Honestly, at the end of the day, when I look at it, as a percentage of GDP five years from now, where will tech be? It will be higher. So we are blessed to be in this industry. It’s a lot of intense competition, but it’s not so zero-sum as some people make it out to be. The TAM (total addressable market) is getting much bigger. Just the impact of this tech is going to be so massive.”

According to Nadella, tech firms should focus on their customers as opposed to the competition. He adds that his view runs counter to billionaire Peter Thiel’s take that “competition is for losers” and that people should build businesses that create new markets.

“The question then, of course, is what is, like, I always go back to what’s the brand identity Microsoft has, brand permission we have and what do customers expect from us? Sometimes, we overthink that every customer wants the same thing from all of the competitors. It’s a different take on the Peter Thiel thing, which is you’ve got to avoid competition by really understanding what customers really want from you versus thinking everybody’s a competitor.”
