Satya Nadella Adds xAI’s Grok 4.1 Fast to Microsoft Copilot Studio in Multi-Model AI Push

Microsoft is widening its artificial intelligence stack again, this time by bringing Elon Musk’s xAI into its Copilot ecosystem.

CEO Satya Nadella says on X that Grok 4.1 Fast is joining Copilot Studio’s model lineup, expanding the range of systems developers can use to build custom AI agents.

“With Copilot Studio, we are focused on adding more choice and flexibility for anyone building custom agents. Great to add Grok 4.1 Fast to our multi-model lineup.”

The addition places xAI alongside OpenAI and Anthropic inside Microsoft’s enterprise builder environment, reinforcing the company’s push toward a multi-model strategy rather than reliance on a single provider.

In a product update, Microsoft says the rollout begins in preview mode and is limited to US-based makers, with other regions undergoing readiness evaluations.

Grok 4.1 Fast is described as a fast-reasoning text-generation model built for large context and deep tool use, capable of handling complex workflows. It does not support image or multimedia generation.

“Starting today, Grok 4.1 Fast is available in preview in early access environments, and is off by default. Your organization’s admin must explicitly opt in to use the model before US-based makers can build with it. If an admin doesn’t opt in, nothing changes and makers keep their current model options. Existing agents continue running exactly as they do today.”

The company also outlines guardrails around data handling and deployment.

“When using Grok 4.1 Fast in Copilot Studio, customer data is not retained or used to train xAI’s models. xAI’s models are hosted outside Microsoft-managed environments, and when you use Grok 4.1 Fast in Copilot Studio, your relationship with xAI will be independent of Microsoft and governed by xAI’s Enterprise Terms of Service and Data Protection Addendum.”

Before inclusion in Copilot Studio, Microsoft says each model undergoes security, safety and quality evaluations, underscoring its responsible AI commitments.

The move deepens Microsoft’s positioning as a neutral AI platform provider, allowing enterprises to select the model that best fits their business scenario rather than locking into a single foundation model provider.
