Elon Musk Hints Solar-Powered AI Satellites Could Make Humans Billionaires in Purchasing Power

Tech titan Elon Musk believes that venturing into space could unlock a vast amount of wealth that would allow every person on the planet to buy whatever they want.

In a series of posts on X, Musk says investors and governments should focus on building solutions that efficiently capture energy from the sun instead of funding small modular reactors to address power constraints on the ground.

“The Sun is an enormous, free fusion reactor in the sky. It is super dumb to make tiny fusion reactors on Earth. Even if you burned four Jupiters, the Sun would still round up to 100% of all power that will ever be produced in the solar system!! Stop wasting money on puny little reactors, unless actively acknowledging that they are just there for your pet science project, jfc.”

According to Musk, every human being will become exponentially wealthier if the world single-mindedly moves to efficiently draw energy from the sun.

“Harnessing even a millionth of the Sun’s energy would make every human a billionaire in purchasing power.”

Replying to a post made by Tom Mueller, CEO of the space mobility firm Impulse, Musk agrees that moving AI compute to space is the only way to “build a civilization at the Kardashev II scale.”

Just last week, Musk outlined what that solar capture system could look like in practice. Musk said solar-powered AI satellites could harness energy directly from the sun, run workloads and send the data back to Earth, highlighting that it is the fastest way to scale capacity as terrestrial energy constraints tighten. He also said a lunar base that launches AI satellites will propel humanity to a Kardashev II civilization.

Musk added that Tesla AI chips, SpaceX satellites, and xAI’s Grok AI are converging toward the goal of data centers in space. He also said that chip engineering takes up a lot of his time at Tesla.

“AI5/AI6 engineering is my biggest time allocation at Tesla. AI5 will be good, AI6 will be great.”
