Meta is weighing whether to partner with Google or OpenAI to bolster the artificial intelligence features inside its social media apps, according to a new report.

Citing The Information, Reuters reports that the conversations are part of a wider strategy under Meta’s new unit, Meta Superintelligence Labs, which is tasked with advancing the company’s AI efforts.

Leaders have explored licensing Google’s Gemini model to handle conversational responses inside Meta AI, the company’s flagship chatbot. Meta has also discussed leveraging OpenAI’s models to power Meta AI and other features in its social media apps.

Any partnerships would likely be temporary, serving as a bridge until Meta’s own models advance. A central priority for Meta Superintelligence Labs is the development of Llama 5, its next-generation model, which is expected to compete with leading rivals.

Says a Meta spokesperson in a statement,

“We are taking an all-of-the-above approach to building the best AI products; and that includes building world-leading models ourselves, partnering with companies, as well as open sourcing technology.”

OpenAI, Google and Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest backer, did not respond to requests for comment.

The push comes as Meta spends heavily to close the gap with industry leaders. Earlier this year, the company committed billions of dollars to hire former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman to co-lead Meta Superintelligence Labs.
