Google says Gmail is evolving from a passive inbox into an active assistant designed to help users manage their lives, not just their messages.
In a new product update, Google says it is bringing Gmail into the Gemini era, using AI to surface the most important messages while reducing noise and clutter.
“Today we’re bringing Gmail into the Gemini era, making it a personal, proactive inbox assistant to help you manage your life, not just your messages… Gmail’s new AI inbox filters out the clutter so you can focus on what’s most important. Think of it as a personalized TL;DR that will catch you up on what matters the most, like a bill due tomorrow, while keeping your data private and under your control.”
Google says early access is beginning now, with broader availability planned in the coming months.
“We’re giving trusted testers access to AI Inbox now, before making it more broadly available in coming months.”
Alongside inbox changes, Google is expanding AI-assisted writing and response tools across Gmail. Google says these features are rolling out to all users at no cost.
“Starting today in Gmail, you can use Help Me Write to polish emails or draft them from scratch. There are also new Suggested Replies, an update to Smart Replies, which use the context of your conversation to offer relevant, one-click responses that match how you write. Both of these features are rolling out to everyone at no cost.”
Additional tools are coming for paid subscribers, including deeper language refinement.
“A new Proofread feature for advanced grammar, tone and style checks will also begin rolling out for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.”
Google is also introducing AI-generated summaries directly inside inbox threads. For paid users, those summaries will extend into search.
“Also rolling out today to everyone at no cost, AI Overviews in Gmail, giving you concise summaries of those loooooooong email chains. For Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, AI Overviews will also be available when you search in Gmail using natural language, like ‘Who was the plumber that gave me a quote for the bathroom renovation last year?’”
The update comes after news emerged that OpenAI plans to turn ChatGPT into a personal super-assistant this year. OpenAI CEO of Applications Fidji Simo recently said that the firm’s long-term goal is to give every user a coordinated team of AI agents overseen by a central assistant.
