Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei says artificial intelligence could trigger sweeping job losses across white-collar work far faster than most analysts expect.
In an new interview on 60 Minutes, Amodei reaffirms his view that AI could erase large portions of entry-level roles across consulting, law, finance and other service industries.
“That is the future we could see if we do not become aware of this problem now.”
He says many of the core tasks performed in those professions are already within the reach of current models.
“Well, if we look at entry-level consultants, lawyers, financial professionals, many of the white-collar service industries, a lot of what they do, AI models are already quite good at and without intervention. It is hard to imagine that there will not be some significant job impact there.”
Amodei warns that the pace of change could outstrip previous technology cycles.
“And my worry is that it will be broad and it will be faster than what we have seen with previous technology.”
The Anthropic chief first raised the alarm in May, projecting that AI could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs and push unemployment to 10 to 20% percent within one to five years.
“But what I am really worried about is where the technology is going. And I think there is a little disconnect here where people will sometimes say, ‘Oh, you are worried about what AI is going to do to jobs, but AI cannot do this, AI cannot do that.’”
He said that mindset overlooks how quickly capabilities are advancing.
“Well, we are talking about today’s AI. The technology is moving quickly. I am worried about advancing the technology and diffusion of that technology through society, and that is where I get to the one to five years.”
Amodei said the timeline is uncertain but real.
“This could happen faster than I imagine, this could happen slower than I imagine, or something very different could happen.”
