Tesla and xAI founder Elon Musk cannot believe that fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos has founded a new startup focused on artificial intelligence and robotics.
According to people familiar with the effort, the Amazon founder will serve as co-chief executive of Project Prometheus, marking his first official leadership position since stepping down as Amazon’s CEO in 2021, The New York Times reports.
Project Prometheus is backed by $6.2 billion in funding, and part of the capital comes from Bezos himself.
The company will focus on AI systems built for engineering and manufacturing across multiple industries, including aerospace, computers and automobiles.
Bezos will lead the company alongside Vik Bajaj, a former Google X researcher who helped launch projects such as Wing and the self-driving unit that became Waymo.
Bajaj also co-founded Verily in 2015 and later ran Foresite Labs before leaving to join Bezos at Project Prometheus.
The company has already hired nearly 100 employees, including researchers from OpenAI, DeepMind and Meta.
Project Prometheus is one of several new AI firms aiming to apply artificial intelligence to physical tasks such as robotics, scientific discovery and industrial design.
