OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says the company’s latest competitive scramble will not last much longer, after Google’s Gemini 3 failed to deliver the disruption OpenAI feared.
In a new interview with journalist Alex Kantrowitz, Altman says Gemini 3 has not, at least so far, had the market impact he expected, though he notes that the release still exposed weaknesses in OpenAI’s product strategy that the company is now moving to fix.
“Gemini 3 has not, or at least has not so far, had the impact we were worried it might. But it did, in the same way that DeepSeek did, identify some weaknesses in our product offering strategy. And we’re addressing those very quickly.
I don’t think we’ll be in this code red that much longer. Historically, these have been kind of like six or eight-week things for us. But I’m glad we’re doing it.”
He points to a recent burst of product releases as evidence that OpenAI is already pushing hard to meet consumer demand and close gaps in its lineup.
“Just today, we launched a new image gen model, which is a great thing, and that’s something consumers really wanted. Last week, we launched 5.2, which is going over extremely well and growing very quickly. We’ll have a few other things to look at launch, and then we’ll also have some continuous improvements like speeding up the service.”
Looking ahead, Altman says OpenAI expects these high-intensity competitive cycles to become a recurring part of the business, as it tries to stay ahead in a fast-moving market.
“My guess is we’ll be doing these once, maybe twice a year, for a long time. And that’s part of really just making sure that we win in our space. A lot of other companies will do great, too, and I’m happy for them. But ChatGPT is still, by far, the dominant chatbot in the market.”
Earlier this month, reports emerged that Sam Altman issued a “Code Red” mandate after Google’s Gemini 3 surpassed OpenAI’s models on benchmark tests. OpenAI responded by rolling out ChatGPT 5.2, designed to perform better on complex, meaningful work than its predecessors.
