OpenAI Rolls Out GPT-5.5 Today, Designed To Complete Complex Tasks From Start to Finish Without Human Hand-Holding

OpenAI has launched its most capable AI model yet, built to carry complex tasks through to completion without requiring constant human guidance.

In a new thread on X, OpenAI says GPT-5.5 is rolling out today for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users across ChatGPT and Codex, with GPT-5.5 Pro also available for Pro, Business and Enterprise users in ChatGPT.

OpenAI says the new model is not an incremental upgrade but a new class of intelligence designed specifically for the demands of agentic work.

“GPT-5.5 is a new class of intelligence for real work and powering agents, built to understand complex goals, use tools, check its work, and carry more tasks through to completion. It marks a new way of getting computer work done.”

OpenAI says GPT-5.5 excels at writing and debugging code, researching online, analyzing data, creating documents and spreadsheets, operating software and moving across tools until a task is finished, with the most notable gains in agentic coding, computer use, knowledge work and early scientific research.

Amid the capability jump, OpenAI says the model does not sacrifice speed for intelligence, a tradeoff that has historically plagued more powerful AI systems.

“GPT-5.5 matches GPT-5.4 per-token latency in real-world serving, while performing better across nearly every evaluation we measured. It also uses significantly fewer tokens to complete the same Codex tasks, making it more efficient as well as more capable.”

For Pro users in particular, the efficiency gains make GPT-5.5 Pro a significantly more practical option for demanding tasks, representing what OpenAI says is a step change in the level of difficulty and quality of work ChatGPT can take on.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says that while GPT 5.5 is already a smart model, the AI giant believes its models will continue to witness rapid improvements, making iterative deployment a big part of its safety strategy.

“We believe the world will be best equipped to win at the team sport of AI resilience this way.”
