OpenAI President Greg Brockman Says Company Is Building an AI ‘Super App’ as Next Phase of ChatGPT

OpenAI says the next phase of ChatGPT is a unified application that combines into one interface for a more integrated AI experience.

Speaking in an interview with Alex Kantrowitz, OpenAI president Greg Brockman says OpenAI is working toward a super app, where ChatGPT evolves into a personal assistant with multiple capabilities.

“So the way I think about the super app is, so it’s going to bring together coding, a browser and ChatGPT. That’s right. So what we want is to build an endpoint application for you that really lets you experience the power of AGI, so the generality.

So you think about what Chat is today, I think Chat is really going to become your personal assistant, your personal AGI. An AI that’s looking out for you, that knows a lot about you, that’s aligned with your goals, that’s trustworthy, that represents you in this digital world.”

According to Brockman, OpenAI’s coding tool is now expanding its capabilities to serve general users, not just software developers.

“Codex you can think of as right now it’s been a tool that we built for software engineers but it’s becoming Codex for everyone that anyone who wants to build can use Codex and to get the computer to go do the thing that they want.

It’s not just about the actual software anymore it’s really about almost the use of computer whether it’s to set up like I usually set settings on my laptop like I forget how to set up the hot corners you just ask Codex to do it it just does it right that’s what computers were always supposed to be is contort to the human rather than contort to them.”

Brockman also outlines a system where AI can actively navigate and act within digital environments, allowing the super app to unify user interactions across different tasks.

“Imagine one application that anything you want your computer to do, you can ask it. And so there’s browsing built in for an AI to be able to actually use a web browser and for you to be able to oversee what the AI is doing.

All of your conversations, regardless of application, whether it’s for chat or whether it’s for code, whether it’s for general knowledge work, that’s all unified in one way that the AI has memory, knows about you.

    So that’s what we’re building.”
