Billionaire Mark Cuban says it is within the realm of possibility for today’s leading generative AI models to fade into the background as infrastructure layers, despite their popularity.
In a new post on X, Mark Cuban says he sees a future where current large language model leaders follow the path of once dominant technology and retail companies that failed to remain relevant as computing evolved.
“Will today’s leading foundational LLMs be the DEC, Cray, Wang, Radio Shack, Sun, Data General, Compaq, etc. of tomorrow?”
Cuban says many generative AI companies appear to be positioning their models as the operating systems of the future, but notes that a different outcome may be more likely.
“GenAI LLMs want to be the operating systems of today and tomorrow. It’s possible they will be the CP/M, DOS, Windows, Unix of the future. But more likely GenAI and the companies that are donating now, will be the TCP/IP of the future. A layer that is hidden from users as new technologies are invented and released.”
The billionaire investor, who made his fortune during the dot-com era, says the next stage of AI evolution is bigger, coming from a deeper understanding of how the world works.
“I’m a big believer that World View, the understanding of how the world actually works, is the next big step.”
Unlike chatbots that “know,” World Models or World View predict the next state of the physical or virtual world by understanding spatial and physical laws, such as gravity and momentum.
He questions whether current foundational model leaders can successfully guide users through that transition.
“And, it’s going to be hard for legacy foundational models to transition end users from what they see today, to whatever comes next. The AI Innovator’s Dilemma.”
Cuban also raises concerns about the financial sustainability of today’s market leaders.
“I’m also not sold that the current leaders can afford to make it all work. They are already burning through cash, and no one really knows what next looks like, or costs. Agree? Disagree? It’s going to be interesting!”
