Ben Affleck Says ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini Scriptwriting Falls Flat, but AI Could Cut Hollywood Costs

Actor and director Ben Affleck says today’s leading AI models fall short when it comes to writing meaningful stories, even as he sees the technology reshaping how movies are made behind the scenes.

Speaking in a new interview with Joe Rogan, Affleck says AI tools tend to produce average, uninspired writing that lacks reliability and creative depth.

“If you try to get ChatGPT or Claude or Gemini to write you something, it’s really shitty, and it’s shitty because by its nature, it goes to the mean, to the average. And it’s not reliable. I actually don’t think it’s very likely that it’s going to be able to write anything meaningful or that it’s going to be making movies.”

Instead, Affleck describes AI as a practical tool that could streamline production and reduce costs, much like visual effects did in earlier eras of filmmaking.

He says AI could eliminate the need for expensive location shoots by realistically recreating environments digitally, allowing productions to focus more on performances rather than logistics.

“We don’t have to go to the North Pole. We can shoot the scene here in our parks and whatever it is, but then make it appear very realistically as if we’re in the North Pole. It will save us a lot of money and a lot of time. We’re going to focus on the performances and not be freezing our ass off out there and running back inside.”

Affleck compares the shift to the evolution of special effects, noting how modern computer-generated imagery replaced earlier, more awkward techniques without eliminating the core role of actors.

“Just like Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn used to be driving their car, and there’s a wind blowing a painting behind them, and they look goofy. Now, people use a lot of computer-generated stuff. And some of it is going to replace just that. Instead of 500 guys in Singapore making $2 an hour to render all the graphics for a superhero movie, they are going to be able to do that a lot easier.”
