David Sacks, the former White House AI and crypto czar, warns that China is set to match the capabilities of Anthropic’s most powerful AI model, Mythos, in just a few months.
In a new post on X, Sacks says that Mythos, which has grabbed headlines in the past few weeks due to its ability for full system takeovers, is just the first of many AI models that will have the same capabilities.
He also predicts that China will deliver a model with the same capabilities within the year.
“It’s time to demystify Mythos. Mythos is not magic. It’s not a doomsday device. It’s the first of many models that can automate cyber tasks (just like coding).
OpenAI’s GPT-5.5-cyber can now do the same. And all the frontier models (including those from China) will be there within approximately 6 months. It’s important to recognize that these models do not create vulnerabilities; they discover them. The bugs are already in the code. Using AI to discover and patch them will actually harden these systems.”
The warning comes as the UK’s Security Institute (AISI) reveals that after Mythos, GPT-5.5 is the second model to complete a 32-step corporate network attack. According to the AISI, GPT-5.5 completed the attack from initial reconnaissance to full network takeover in two out of 10 attempts.
“On our narrow cyber tasks, GPT-5.5 achieved a ~71% average success rate on expert-level challenges that test skills like exploiting memory corruptions, breaking cryptographic implementations, and reversing stripped binaries.
In one of our harder challenges, a human expert spent ~12 hours with professional tools to reverse-engineer a custom virtual machine. GPT-5.5 solved it in under 11 minutes at a cost of $1.73.”
The AISI echoes Sacks’s sentiment that many AI models will eventually have similar cyber capabilities.
“A key question after our evaluation of Mythos Preview earlier this month was whether its performance was a one-off. GPT-5.5 – a different model, from a different developer – achieving similar results suggests this is part of a broader trend in AI cyber capabilities.”
