OpenAI president Greg Brockman is revealing why the AI giant suddenly shuttered its generative AI video platform Sora.
In a new interview with Alex Kantrowitz, Brockman explains the key difference between ChatGPT and Sora, highlighting that OpenAI chose to allocate its resources to the former.
“But the thing that’s important to realize is technologically that the Sora models, which are incredible models, by the way, are a different branch of the tech tree than the core reasoning GPT series. They’re just built in a very different way. And to some extent, we’re really saying that pursuing both branches is very hard for us to do for these applications.”
Late last month, news emerged that OpenAI had dropped Sora after just four months in operation. At the time, the firm did not provide any reason behind the move.
According to Brockman, OpenAI is looking at using the Sora models for a potential push in robotics, which he notes is still in the very early stages.
“Now, we are actually continuing the Sora research program in the context of robotics, which I think is very clearly going to be a transformative application, which is still a little bit in the research phase, that robotics is not really yet mature and deployed in the way that we’re going to see this real takeoff of this technology and knowledge work over the next year.”
For now, Brockman says OpenAI is prioritizing scaling its GPT systems.
“And so it’s a recognition of, for this moment, we really need to put the primary focus on developing the GPT series.”
