US Commander Confirms Military Using AI Tools in Operations Against Iran

A senior U.S. military commander says American forces are already deploying AI tools to accelerate battlefield decision-making.

In a new video update posted on X, Admiral Brad Cooper, who is overseeing forces conducting Operation Epic Fury against Iran, says AI systems are now being integrated into military operations.

Cooper says the technology is helping commanders process large volumes of intelligence faster than traditional methods allow.

“First, our warfighters are leveraging a variety of advanced AI tools. These systems help us see through vast amounts of data in seconds so our leaders can cut through the noise and make smarter decisions faster than the enemy can react.”

Cooper emphasizes that despite the use of AI tools, humans remain responsible for lethal decisions.

“Humans will always make final decisions on what to shoot and what not to shoot and when to shoot. But advanced AI tools can turn processes that used to take hours and sometimes even days into seconds.”

The admiral’s statements come just a few weeks after Anthropic stood its ground against the use of AI for domestic mass surveillance and fully autonomous lethal weapons. In January, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned that no one knows how to fully control AI systems.

“I can’t tell you there’s a 100% chance that even the systems we build are perfectly reliable. We do everything we can to make them more reliable every day. We run tests, and we advocate for the regulation of the technology. I think we do pretty well, but even we can’t guarantee that everything is perfectly safe.”

In a statement to NBC News, Representative Sara Jacobs echoes Amodei’s sentiments, saying a human operator should always have the final say.

“AI tools aren’t 100% reliable — they can fail in subtle ways and yet operators continue to over-trust them. We have a responsibility to enforce strict guardrails on the military’s use of AI and guarantee a human is in the loop in every decision to use lethal force, because the cost of getting it wrong could be devastating for civilians and the service members carrying out these missions.”
