A new study suggests AI is becoming a major influence on how executives make decisions inside their companies.
Research commissioned by Confluent and conducted by market research agency 3Gem surveyed 200 UK business leaders, including CEOs, founders and other C-suite executives, about how they make high-stakes decisions.
The study finds that many leaders still rely heavily on instinct because they lack timely access to reliable data.
More than half of the executives surveyed, about 59%, say they frequently rely on gut instinct when making decisions. Meanwhile, 60% say the data they need is difficult to access, and 71% say the information they receive is already outdated by the time it reaches them.
The time pressure facing executives also limits deeper analysis.
About 62% of leaders say they simply do not have enough time to analyze data before a decision must be made.

Because of those constraints, many executives are now turning to AI as a decision-making tool.
According to the survey, 62% of executives now use AI to make the majority of their decisions, while only 18% say they do not use AI at all.
The influence of AI is extending into workforce decisions as well.
Nearly four in five leaders, or 79%, say they trust AI to support complex decisions, and one in four executives say they already use AI to manage employees. About 27% report using AI when making hiring or firing decisions.
Many leaders say the technology is helping them move faster.
The study finds that 88% of executives say AI helps them make decisions more quickly, while 83% say it reduces stress during high-pressure decision-making.
However, the growing reliance on AI is also reshaping how leaders view their own judgment.
About 70% of executives say they now second-guess their own instincts if they conflict with AI recommendations, and nearly half, about 46%, say they now rely more on AI than on advice from colleagues when making decisions.
