Aaron Levie says the widespread adoption of AI agents will not just change how existing companies operate, but will give rise to entirely new categories of businesses built around implementing and exploiting those agents.
In a new post on X, the Box chief says companies hoping to unlock the full value of AI agents will need to rethink their underlying workflows, a process that most organizations are not equipped to handle on their own.
He says the challenge will create the first major category of new businesses: firms dedicated to implementing AI agents inside existing enterprises.
“As enterprises look to deploy AI agents across all forms of work, it’s not possible for every company to figure out how to do this on their own.
Most companies don’t have the IT teams to deliver on this, so there will be entirely new system integrators that emerge to help companies redesign their workflows, implement the tech, drive the change management, and keep the AI agents up to date for the organization.”
According to Levie, future integrators will need deep expertise across disciplines ranging from marketing and legal to healthcare and software development.
Levie outlines a second category of businesses that will emerge as some companies move faster than incumbents by building entirely new firms around AI agents from day one. He says these firms will use AI agents internally to deliver services more cheaply, faster or at a higher quality than traditional competitors.
“This will be the new law firm that uses AI to change the business model of [law firms], marketing agencies that can support high-quality campaigns for smaller-sized companies, engineering shops that can take on bigger project work at a lower cost, and so on.”
He closes by emphasizing that the breadth of change comes from how fundamentally different it is to work alongside AI agents.
“In all, there are going to be lots of new forms of businesses that will emerge as a result of AI agents because of how different working with agents can be.”
Levie is not alone in the view that AI agents will transform businesses. Recently, Wall Street strategist Jordi Visser said that AI agents will unlock new revenue streams for hyperscalers as firms adopt the technology next year.
