A new analysis from OpenAI points to a widening split inside modern enterprises, where a small band of heavy AI users is pulling far ahead of the average employee.
In the firm’s The State of Enterprise AI report, OpenAI drew usage patterns from ChatGPT Enterprise and a survey of 9,000 workers across close to one hundred companies.
OpenAI says some employees do far more with AI than others, even when given identical tools. These workers consume more intelligence, touch more tasks and integrate advanced features into their day-to-day systems.
“Our data shows a widening gap between ‘frontier’ workers and firms, and the median. Frontier workers (95th percentile) send 6x more messages than the median employee and engage more intensively across advanced capabilities… These patterns are particularly meaningful given the finding that time savings increase as users consume more intelligence and engage across more distinct tasks.”
Looking closer at time savings, OpenAI finds that heavy users report more than 10 hours saved per week, while others report saving 40-60 minutes per day.
The report shows adoption spreading quickly across technology, healthcare, manufacturing, finance and professional services.
“87% of IT workers report faster IT issue resolution.
85% of marketing and product users report faster campaign execution.
75% of HR professionals report improved employee engagement.
73% of engineers report faster code delivery.”
According to the ChatGPT creator, enterprise AI is rapidly accelerating not just in breadth but in depth.
“ChatGPT now serves more than 800 million users every week, and this rapid consumer adoption has created a powerful flywheel, accelerating the pace at which AI is being brought into work and professional settings.
The history of general-purpose technologies—from steam engines to semiconductors—shows that significant economic value is created after firms translate underlying capabilities into scaled use cases. Enterprise AI now appears to be entering this phase.”
