Mark Cuban Warns China Could Win AI War and Deploy Trojan-Horse Models To Influence Americans

Billionaire investor Mark Cuban warns that China is deploying an AI policy that can dangerously shape how the American public thinks.

In a new post on X, Cuba notes that fears over TikTok will pale in comparison to what could happen if China wins the race by building the most widely adopted AI systems.

He says the real danger isn’t just technological supremacy, but the influence that could come with Chinese-built models becoming the foundation for developers, applications and everyday digital behavior in the United States.

“If you thought TikTok was a manipulative [platform], you ain’t seen nothing like a free, open-source Chinese AI model designed to influence what Americans think.”

Cuban warns that China’s open-source AI policy could give the Asian giant a backdoor into shaping US public opinion.

“The HUGE point people miss about the AI wars between our foundational models and those from China, is that if it’s perceived their models are better, and cheaper, China will open source theirs. Our companies and global developers will use them for almost everything. At that point, not only will China have won the AI tech war, they will have a Trojan horse to influence how we all think.”

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang previously said that China’s AI models are “nanoseconds behind us.” He also warned that China is moving faster in applying AI across industries, benefiting from lighter regulation and a culture of rapid technological adoption.

“Their open source models are well ahead of us. And then on the application layer, we have to be quite mindful because their applications are better, fast-moving, their society is very quick in adopting new technology, and they’re under-regulated at the industrial level. And so the applications in China are advancing incredibly fast.”
