Global Mobile Scam Wave Hits $400 Billion – Google Arms Android With AI Firepower To Stop Attacks

A rising wave of mobile fraud is forcing smartphone platforms into an AI-driven security race as scam losses scale into the hundreds of billions.

In a new blog post, Google says fraudsters leverage advanced AI tools to run convincing scams, resulting in losses of over $400 billion globally in the last year alone.

The tech giant says it is fighting back by using the best of Google AI to build a multi-layered protection system designed to block scam calls and messages before reaching a user.

“Android’s scam defenses protect users around the world from over 10 billion suspected malicious calls and messages every month. In addition, Google continuously performs safety checks to maintain the integrity of the RCS service. In the past month alone, this ongoing process blocked over 100 million suspicious numbers from using RCS, stopping potential scams before they could even be sent.”

According to Google, Android uses AI to automatically filter spam messages by scrutinizing the sender’s reputation and message content. Suspicious messages are directly moved to the “spam & blocked” folder. Google also blocks suspicious links in messages considered to be spam or scams.

“For more complex threats, Scam Detection uses on-device AI to analyze messages from unknown senders for patterns of conversational scams (like pig butchering) and provide real-time warnings. This helps secure your privacy while providing a robust shield against text scams.”

For scam calls, Google notes that Android is designed to automatically block known scam calls, with Call Screen having the capability to answer a call on a user’s behalf to identify thieves.

“If you answer, the protection continues with Scam Detection, which uses on-device AI to provide real-time warnings for suspicious conversational patterns. This processing is completely ephemeral, meaning no call content is ever saved or leaves your device.”
