Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei says the rapid advance and diffusion of AI could eliminate half of white-collar jobs within five years, and he is now laying out the reasons behind the forecast.
In May, the Anthropic CEO predicted that AI would wipe out 50% of all entry-level white-collar jobs and push unemployment to 10-20% in the next one to five years.
In a panel discussion at the AI+ DC Summit 2025, he explains the rationale behind his prediction. Amodei says that private conversations with CEOs about plans for AI adoption and labor reduction convinced him the public had not been fully informed.
“I don’t think we’ve communicated to you very, very accurately about what this technology is capable of and where it’s going, the ways it could benefit you, and in the ways it could be a threat to you if you don’t react to it in the right way.”
He points to research already showing measurable damage.
“We’ve even seen some research externally showing that there’s a job impact there already, for example, the work from Eric Brynjolfsson and others showing that white-collar entry-level jobs have contracted already by 13%.”
The bigger concern, he adds, is what happens when today’s narrow capabilities are replaced by more general ones.
“But what I’m really worried about is where the technology is going. And I think there’s a little disconnect here where people will sometimes say, ‘Oh, you’re worried about what AI is going to do to jobs, but AI can’t do this, AI can’t do that.’
Well, we’re talking about today’s AI. The technology is moving quickly. I’m worried about advancing the technology and diffusion of that technology through society, and that’s where I get to the one to five years. As with most things, when an exponential is moving very quickly, you can’t be sure. This could happen faster than I imagine, this could happen slower than I imagine, or something very different could happen.”
