The US government is standing up a new elite technology unit, known as the Tech Force, designed to push artificial intelligence and modern software deeper into the federal government.

The White House-backed initiative, known as the US Tech Force, plans to recruit roughly 1,000 engineers to work inside federal agencies on some of the government’s most complex and sensitive systems, according to program materials.

The US government says the effort targets core functions ranging from financial infrastructure at the Treasury Department to advanced programs at the Department of Defense, as agencies race to modernize aging systems and accelerate AI adoption across government.

Tech Force is structured as a two-year program that embeds technologists directly within agencies, where they will operate in small teams reporting to senior agency leadership. Participants will work on large-scale civic and defense challenges while receiving technical training and exposure to industry best practices.

The government says the program is being built in partnership with major private-sector technology firms, creating a pipeline between government service and industry.

“The initial roster of private sector partners includes Adobe, Amazon Web Services, AMD, Anduril, Apple, Box, C3.ai, Coinbase, Databricks, Dell Technologies, Docusign, Google Public Sector, IBM, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, Oracle, Palantir, Salesforce, SAP, ServiceNow, Snowflake, Robinhood, Uber, Workday, xAI, and Zoom. This list will expand over time.”

Tech Force says it is seeking candidates with skills in software engineering, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analytics, and technical project management, with an emphasis on problem-solving ability and public service motivation.

Most roles will be based in Washington, DC, though some positions may be located at agency offices across the country. Remote work availability will vary depending on agency needs and mission requirements.

As for compensation, Tech Force says successful candidates can expect to receive roughly $150,000 to $200,000 annually, depending on experience and placement. Benefits include health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and eligibility for performance-based awards.
