Trump Unveils ‘Ratepayer Protection Pledge’ As AI Giants Google, OpenAI and More Agree To Cover Power Costs for Data Centers

The White House says seven major AI companies will now bear the cost of powering their expanding data center infrastructure.

President Donald J. Trump unveils the “Ratepayer Protection Pledge,” an agreement with leading AI firms designed to protect Americans from electricity price hikes due to data center energy requirements.

Under the pledge, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle and xAI agree to build, bring or purchase new power generation resources and cover the cost of electricity delivery infrastructure needed to support their data centers.

The White House says the agreement ensures that “such expenses are not passed to American households.”

The companies will negotiate separate rate structures with utilities and state governments and commit to paying those rates for the power and associated infrastructure required to run their facilities.

Under the agreement, the companies will pay for the electricity capacity even if the power ultimately goes unused.

Companies participating in the pledge will also coordinate with grid operators to make backup generation resources available during emergencies, a measure the administration says will help strengthen grid reliability and prevent blackouts.

The White House says the agreement is a way to support the expansion of AI infrastructure while protecting consumers from rising electricity prices.

The pledge also includes commitments from participating companies to hire and train workers from communities where new data centers are built, with the administration saying the initiative is expected to create thousands of jobs while strengthening the US power grid.

“America’s continued economic and technological leadership depends on reliable, large-scale data center infrastructure built here at home. As that infrastructure grows and the related electricity demand increases, the American people should not be footing the bill.”
