These 10 US States Are Leading the Nation in AI Usage, According to Anthropic

A new Anthropic study reveals which US states are spearheading the usage of AI, specifically its chatbot Claude.

In its latest Anthropic Economic Index Report, the AI startup adjusted for a state’s population, so big states don’t automatically look like they use more AI just because more people live there.

For its Usage Index, the firm says US states that have a score greater than 1 are using AI more than expected, given the size of their population, while those scoring below 1 are using the tech less than expected relative to their population.

At the top of the list is Washington, D.C., with a Usage Index score of 4. New York comes in at number two with a Usage Index score of 2.68, with Massachusetts landing at number three with a 1.60 score.

California and Colorado round out the top five list with scores of 1.48 and 1.41, respectively.

Grabbing the sixth spot is Washington with a score of 1.36. Virginia ranks seventh, garnering a score of 1.34, and Vermont gets seat number eight with a score of 1.13.

Oregon and Utah conclude the top ten list with scores of 1.11 and 1.07, respectively.

On the global scale, the US ranks third in AI use with a Usage Index score of 3.68. Singapore sits a number two, getting a score of 4.19, and Israel leads the pack with a score of 4.90.

Across the US, Anthropic’s data shows that Claude is being heavily used for computer and mathematical jobs (27%), educational instruction and library (13.9%) and arts, design, entertainment, sports and media (10.0%).
