OpenAI is releasing a new version of its flagship AI model designed to handle complex knowledge work, research tasks and software development more effectively.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announces on X that GPT-5.4 is now available through the company’s API and Codex developer platform, with the update rolling out to ChatGPT users throughout the day.
According to Altman, the new model improves several core capabilities used by professionals and developers.
“GPT-5.4 is launching, available now in the API and Codex and rolling out over the course of the day in ChatGPT. It’s much better at knowledge work and web search, and it has native computer use capabilities.”
One of the most significant changes is the model’s ability to interact directly with computers.
OpenAI says GPT-5.4 is the first general-purpose model from the company with built-in computer-use capabilities, allowing AI agents to operate software and complete complex workflows across multiple applications.
The system can also process far larger amounts of information than previous versions.
GPT-5.4 supports up to one million tokens of context, allowing the model to analyze large documents, maintain long conversations and complete multi-step tasks that require planning over extended periods.
OpenAI says the model also improves web research for highly specific queries while keeping track of complex questions that require longer reasoning.
The company adds that GPT-5.4 can outline a plan before completing tasks, allowing users to steer the AI while it is generating responses.
OpenAI says the new model is also more efficient than earlier versions, using fewer tokens to solve problems while delivering faster results for developers and users.
