OpenAI and Nvidia To Pour Billions of Dollars Into UK Data Centers Amid Global AI Arms Race: Report

OpenAI and Nvidia are reportedly gearing up to channel billions of dollars into UK data centers as the competition to dominate artificial intelligence infrastructure intensifies.

The two companies are expected to announce their plans during President Donald Trump’s visit to Britain next week, when American firms across multiple industries are expected to unveil tens of billions of dollars in new investments, reports Bloomberg.

OpenAI is partnering with London-based Nscale Global Holdings on the project. The UK company has been building out sites designed for large-scale AI workloads, including a facility in Essex with capacity for as many as 45,000 Nvidia GB200 chips.

Nscale, which launched in 2024, previously pledged to spend $2.5 billion over three years on UK sites, including the Essex project. It has also raised funds tied to a potential partnership with ByteDance and has become a core anchor for OpenAI’s expansion in Europe.

Tech titan OpenAI has been busy flooding the markets with billion-dollar investments. Late last month, the firm said it was aiming for an initial 10 anchor partnerships across regions as it builds out Stargate, a project designed to deliver unprecedented computing capacity for AI development.

More than 30 countries have reportedly reached out to OpenAI with interest in joining its $500 billion Stargate initiative, which has expanded internationally.

In Norway, OpenAI has committed to serve as anchor tenant for a data center that could reach 520 megawatts. In Abu Dhabi, the company announced plans for a 5-gigawatt facility, of which it will use 1 gigawatt directly.

OpenAI is also moving into South Asia. It is scouting local partners for a 1-gigawatt data center in India, which would be among the country’s largest such sites. The build is expected to support localized chatbot services and ease concerns over cross-border data transfers.
