Meta Reassigns 7,000 Employees to AI-Focused Units Days Before Laying Off 8,000 Others: Report

Social media giant Meta is reportedly moving thousands of employees to focus more on intelligence ahead of its plans to let go of 10% of its workforce.

Meta told employees it was reassigning 7,000 workers to new AI-focused organizations just days before laying off roughly 8,000 others, the latest move in what is becoming one of the most sweeping corporate restructurings in the company’s history, The New York Times reports.

Janelle Gale, Meta’s head of human resources, says the reassigned workers will be moved to four new organizations built around AI tools and apps, using what she describes as AI-native design structures with fewer managers per employee than other parts of the company.

Gale says the restructuring “will make us more productive and make the work more rewarding.”

The reassignments were announced ahead of layoffs affecting roughly 8,000 employees, approximately 10% of Meta’s total workforce, with layoff emails slated to be sent at 4 a.m. local time on Wednesday. Gale had asked employees to work remotely that day.

Meta says US employees affected by the cuts will receive 16 weeks of severance pay plus two additional weeks for every year of service.

“We know days like this are extremely hard, and we appreciate you showing up for each other.”

The moves come as Meta continues to pour tens of billions of dollars into AI spend this year. According to the firm’s latest quarterly earnings, Meta now expects 2026 capital expenditures between $125 billion and $145 billion, an increase from prior guidance, driven by higher component costs and the need to expand data center capacity for future AI demand.
