Google is pushing deeper into wearable AI with a new partnership aimed squarely at the fast-growing smart-glasses market, bringing Warby Parker into its hardware strategy as it prepares a direct challenge to Meta’s Ray-Ban lineup.
In a new product update on Android XR, Google says it is working with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to design lightweight, fashion-forward AI glasses built for all-day use.
The company is developing two models that expand its ambitions beyond headsets and into eyewear that blends into everyday life. Google notes that form factor matters, saying that AI will only scale if hardware is comfortable enough for constant wear and stylish enough to blend into personal identity.
“For AI and XR to be truly helpful, the hardware needs to fit seamlessly into your life and match your personal style. One form factor doesn’t fit all, so we’re building Android XR to support a diverse range of devices. We want to give you the freedom to choose the right balance of weight, style and immersion for your needs.”
The first category of glasses focuses on screen-free assistance. Google says these frames will integrate microphones, speakers and cameras to let users speak naturally with Gemini, take photos and receive contextual help without a visible display.
A second model takes a step closer to augmented reality by adding a private in-lens display. Google says this version will surface information exactly when needed, turning the glasses into a subtle heads-up interface for tasks like navigation or translation.
Google says the effort is part of a broader Android XR ecosystem push, where headsets, wired XR glasses and wearable AI assistants all operate on the same platform. It also released new developer tools to encourage apps that can tap into the glasses’ sensors and on-device AI.
The move signals Google’s clearest competitive shot yet at the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which have become a breakout hit thanks to their lightweight frames, integrated cameras and Meta AI assistant.
