Elon Musk says xAI’s frontier model, Grok, will make significant gains in intelligence as the AI startup rebuilds its foundations from the ground up.
In a new post on X, Musk says he sees the next couple of months as a critical window for Grok.
“It will take until May to be close to Opus 4.6 and June to match and maybe exceed. Short time by normal standards, but a long time in the AI arena.”
Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6 is considered the most intelligent publicly available frontier model to date. The model can support up to one million input tokens, allowing users to process entire codebases, massive legal contracts, or extensive research corpora in a single request.
Last month, Musk acknowledged that xAI is behind its competitors and vowed that the firm will make big strides in the coming months to leapfrog rivals.
“xAI will catch up this year and then exceed them all by such a long distance in three years that you will need the James Webb telescope to see who is in second place.”
As part of the efforts to win the AI race, Musk announced in late March the Terafab project, a massive semiconductor factory backed by SpaceX, Tesla and xAI. At the time, Musk said that Terafab’s goal is to ship AI chips to the tune of one terawatt per year, dwarfing the current global output of about 20 gigawatts.
