Tesla CEO Elon Musk says humanoid robots are advancing fast enough that sales to the general public could begin as early as next year, following an initial rollout inside Tesla’s factories.
In an interview with Larry Fink at Davos, Musk says Optimus robots are already being used to work inside Tesla factories and are expected to take on more complex roles before expanding beyond industrial settings.
“Humanoid robotics will advance very quickly. I think we do have some of the Tesla Optimus robots doing simple tasks in the factory. Probably later this year, by the end of this year, I think they’ll be doing more complex tasks, but still deployed in an industrial environment.”
Musk says the next major milestone is consumer availability, contingent on reliability, safety and functionality reaching a high enough standard.
“I’d say, by the end of next year, I think, we would be selling humanoid robots to the public. That’s when we are confident that it’s very high reliability, very high safety, and the range of functionality is also very high. You can basically ask it to do anything you’d like.”
Last week, ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood said that Optimus robots are 200,000 times more difficult to get working correctly compared to a Robotaxi. According to Wood, Optimus robots will likely improve over time in incremental stages as opposed to immediately getting a version that has full-human capabilities.
