US-based crypto exchange Coinbase is rolling out a new wallet designed specifically for the use of AI agents.
In a new post on X, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announces the launch of what the company is calling an agentic wallet or Awal.
“AI Agent wallets are here. Try it out – import the skills.”
Erik Reppel, head of engineering at Coinbase Developer Platform, says Awal is built to let AI agents send, receive, pay and trade on-chain while still remaining under human oversight.
“Agents need to: send, receive, pay, trade. Now they can. Introducing Awal, an agentic wallet purpose built to AI.
Try it for yourself:
npx awal@latest –help.”
According to Reppel, Awal is a wallet that’s accessible by an agent and controllable by a human. He says an agent can take a curated set of actions, and the human can set spending limits for those actions.
“The wallet is authenticated via email, meaning if you (or your agent) have an email, it has a wallet.”
Reppel says Awal relies on Base to process stablecoin or token transactions. Base is Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 solution.
Users can add the wallet’s capabilities to their agents using Coinbase’s developer tools.
“Give it to your agent, they can figure it out: npx skills add coinbase/agentic-wallet-skills.”
News of Coinbase’s Awal comes as Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao recently said that AI agents will become a major force in the economy, purchasing goods and services using crypto as their payment rails.
