AI mass adoption is now here, as artificial intelligence use is quickly spreading across the country.
A new survey from Epoch AI and Ipsos, based on more than 2,000 US adults, finds that roughly half reported using AI tools in the past week, with usage heavily concentrated in specific categories.
The data shows information lookup and recommendations as the clear top use case. Around 80% of AI users reported using the technology for search-related tasks, making it the most common application by a wide margin.
Writing and editing text ranks second, with roughly 60% of users reporting use, followed by advice or learning and brainstorming ideas, both in the mid-50% range.
Visual and analytical tasks appear less common but still significant. About 40% of users reported creating or editing images, while a similar share used AI for summarizing or analyzing documents.
The study also shows that the more technical applications trail behind.
Roughly one-third of users reported using AI for technical work such as coding, math, or data tasks, indicating that adoption is still skewed toward general-purpose use cases rather than specialized workflows.
At the bottom of the list are more personal or social applications.
Fewer than 30% of users reported using AI for personal reflection or casual conversation, while companionship use cases remain minimal.

The distribution suggests that AI is primarily being used as a productivity and information tool rather than a social or emotional one.
