David Sacks says fears that artificial intelligence will wipe out jobs are not backed by the data, noting that workers in AI-exposed occupations are actually seeing stronger job growth and higher real wages.
In a fresh post on X, the White House AI Czar cites data from a Vanguard study that challenges the dominant narrative around automation and employment.
“According to a new study from Vanguard, the occupations most exposed to AI automation are actually outperforming the rest of the labor market in terms of job growth and real wage increases.”
He highlights data showing that employment growth has been faster in roles with high AI exposure than in the broader workforce.
“Job growth was up 1.7% in occupations with high AI exposure, compared to 0.8% in all other occupations.”
Sacks added that wage data tells a similar story, with AI-exposed workers seeing materially stronger gains after inflation.
“Real wages increased 3.8% in occupations with high AI exposure, compared with 0.7% in all other occupations.”
Rather than eliminating work, Sacks said the evidence suggests AI is amplifying productivity, allowing workers to produce more value and command higher pay.
“Rather than causing job loss, AI is making workers more productive, driving gains in both jobs and wages.”
Sacks also criticizes the tech industry for failing to clearly communicate these dynamics to the public, arguing that poor messaging has allowed fears around AI-driven unemployment to spread.
“Undoubtedly, AI companies have done a bad job messaging this.”
Recent comments from leaders in the largest AI firms support Sacks’s concern that Big Tech is doing a poor job of communicating the impact of AI on society. In October, tech titan Elon Musk said that AI and robots “will replace all jobs.”
And earlier this year, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei predicted that AI will wipe out half of entry-level, white-collar roles in just a few years.
