Microsoft may be struggling with Copilot subscriptions, but it is winning big in its investments in OpenAI.

According to an estimated and reconstructed cap table of OpenAI circulating on social media platforms, Microsoft’s $13 billion investment in the ChatGPT creator is now valued at $228.3 billion.

The figure represents an eye-popping 1,656% increase.

Microsoft owns 26.79% of OpenAI, a company that boasts a $852 billion post-money valuation, according to the document.

Data also shows that SoftBank owns 11.66% of the AI giant, and its $64.6 billion investment is now worth $99.3 billion.

Meanwhile, Nvidia owns a 3.47% stake, and Amazon holds a 4.66% ownership in OpenAI. In total, strategic corporates own 46.58% of the firm.

OpenAI Foundation, a nonprofit that holds business control over the for-profit business, owns 25.80% of the ChatGPT creator.

As for Sam Altman, the data shows that he does not own shares currently, as the equity grant is pending as part of the public benefit corporation conversion. Current and former employees own about 19.35% of OpenAI.

The rest of OpenAI’s shares are split between institutional investors and secondary market buyers. Venture capital and institutional investors own a total of 7.83% of the firm, while retail, individual and secondary market investors hold a 0.40% stake.

Forbes first published OpenAI’s cap table, which was quickly shared on social media. The document is not an official disclosure, and cost-basis figures are best estimates from public reporting.
