Apple is reportedly gearing up for a major shift that could redefine how AI works on the iPhone.
The company plans to open Siri to third-party AI assistants as part of an overhaul tied to its upcoming iOS 27 update, Bloomberg reports, citing people familiar with the matter.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been integrated into Siri since the launch of Apple Intelligence in 2024, and the update will enable the voice assistant to tap into rival AI assistants through the new Extensions system.
The new tools would allow chatbot apps downloaded from the App Store to integrate directly with Siri, enabling users to route queries through external services inside the voice assistant.
If installed, apps such as Alphabet’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude could handle requests through Siri, similar to how it currently interacts with ChatGPT.
The move carries financial and AI distribution implications for Apple’s platform.
By enabling third-party AI services inside Siri, the company could generate additional revenue from subscriptions processed through the App Store, tying AI usage more directly to its existing services business.
Recently, reports emerged that generative AI apps paid Apple close to $900 million in App Store fees last year as the tech firm typically charges a 30% commission on app sales and in-app purchases.
With more than 2.35 billion Apple users, Siri could become the most dominant AI chatbot interface while collecting fees from Gemini, Claude and ChatGPT subscriptions.
Separately, Apple is continuing work with Google on integrating Gemini models at the system level, a parallel effort focused on improving Siri’s underlying technology rather than enabling third-party access.
An Apple spokesperson declined to comment.
