An Anthropic study finds that AI-driven job loss or wage stagnation is not people’s top fear when it comes to artificial intelligence.

In a new study, Anthropic polled 80,508 people across 159 countries and 70 languages to gain insights into their hopes and concerns surrounding AI.

The Claude creator finds that people are mostly concerned about AI’s unreliability, with 26.7% saying hallucinations, inaccuracies and fake citations defeat the purpose of working with an AI chatbot.

Concerns about AI causing job displacement, unemployment, economic inequality, wage stagnation or negative impacts on workers and the economy rank second at 22.3%. Fears about loss of human agency are a close third at 21.9%.

“Unreliability was the most common concern—27% worry that AI won’t do what it’s supposed to, though for many respondents it appeared alongside other concerns rather than as their primary worry. Concerns about jobs and the economy (22%) and about maintaining human autonomy and agency (22%) were similarly common. Concern about jobs and the economy was the strongest predictor of overall AI sentiment, suggesting it’s more salient than any other issue.”

Despite the fears, 81% say AI is helping them move toward their vision, while 18.9% report that AI hasn’t delivered at all.

Among those who found AI helpful, 32% say they are getting a productivity boost from the technology, and about 17.2% say the technology serves as a thinking partner or collaborator. Nearly 10% say AI helped them learn a new skill or subject.

Meanwhile, 8.7% say AI has assisted them in building something that was previously unreachable, 7.2% say it helped them synthesize research and information and 6.1% say AI gave them emotional support.
